Master's in Applied Technology & Performance Improvement
Admission Procedure
UNT offers students a Master of Science and a Master of Education degree in Applied Technology & Performance Improvement (ATPI). Both are 100% Internet-based degrees: there are no on-campus classroom sessions!
The Master of Science degree with a major in Applied Technology & Performance Improvement is designed for those professionals who are seeking careers in the field of training and development. This 36 semester hour program consists of coursework in needs analysis and training analysis, introduction to training and development, facilitation skills, research, diversity, curriculum theory, and program evaluation. This degree is 100% online.
The Master of Education degree with a major in Applied Technology & Performance Improvement is a 36 semester hour program designed for people who are seeking careers in the education field. Like the Master of Science, this degree program provides coursework in basic instructional strategies, history and principles of applied technology, work-based learning, research, diversity, and curriculum theory. This is the recommended degree for those seeking certification in Trade and Industry Education, Marketing Education or Health Science Education. This degree is 100% online.
A student may enroll for one semester without an approved GRE score. Students must submit a GRE score before being officially admitted to the Master's program.
Application Process
You must first apply to the University of North Texas Graduate School. The application can be obtained on-line. Upon acceptance to the Graduate School you are responsible for reading the Graduate Catalog in the following areas:
- Master's degree process at UNT.
- Section on Learning Technologies (LT) Master's programs and degree plans.
- Overview of the course descriptions for the Master's degree for which you are applying.
If you have checked ATPI as your major on the Graduate School application your GPA will be reviewed. If you have recorded a GRE score with the Graduate School, the score will be sent to the ATPI program with your application. You will then receive a letter requesting that you send additional information in order for the ATPI faculty to review your request for admission. This information can be found under the "Admission" section of this page. If you have not yet taken the GRE please view the information under "Non-Degree Student".
Non-Degree Student
If you have not yet taken the GRE, you should apply to the Graduate School as a non-degree student. As a non-degree student, you are allowed to take up to 12 credit hours of graduate courses before having to submit a GRE score to the Graduate School. Make certain that the courses you take are listed on the degree plan for the Master's degree that you are seeking.
Once the GRE scores are submitted, your application will be sent to our department and considered for acceptance into the ATPI program. It is highly recommended that you take no more than 3 credit hours. The reason for this is so that you do not accrue too many credit hours before you are officially admitted to the program. Some students take several courses and then are unable to meet the admission requirements to the ATPI program. There is no guarantee that you will be admitted to the ATPI program just because you have been admitted to the Graduate School. All programs at UNT have different admissions criteria. The course that you take during this time must fit into the ATPI Master's degree plan that you are seeking. Both degree plans are posted on the Learning Technologies website under Master's Degrees.
Once you have submitted a GRE score you must contact the Graduate School and have your degree choice changed from non-degree to ATPI-MEd or ATPI-MS. Your application will be sent to the Department of Learning Technologies. Submission of your application to the ATPI program from the Graduate School does not mean automatic acceptance into the program. Other criteria will be reviewed in addition to the GRE score (see Admission section below).
For information regarding your status contact the Graduate School at (940)565-3945.
Admission
Once the ATPI program receives your application from the Graduate School you will receive a letter requesting the following information:
- A one-page statement of your career goal and how this Master's degree in ATPI will assist you in meeting this goal (where you are coming from and where you expect the degree to take you)
- Documentation of your professional work experience in education or training. A form entitled Teaching/Training Experience Form is located on the ATPI Master's web page for this purpose.
- A copy of your professional resume.
The faculty will be looking for such things as:
- Relevant work experience (Career and Technology Education, corporate training)
- Certification(s) held
- Publications/writings
- Presentations
- Involvement in professional associations
- Leadership involvement and potential.
The ATPI faculty will review all materials. A letter will be sent to you indicating their decision. Admission decisions are made during the fall and spring semesters only. A decision will be made by the end of the semester in which ATPI receives your application from the Graduate School. Summer applicants will be notified by the end of the fall semester.
Individuals who do not meet all of the required educational and work experience qualifications will be required to take leveling courses in addition to the courses required on the Master's degree plan. See the link on leveling requirements and courses on the ATPI Master's degree page on the LT website. These leveling courses do not have to be taken before registering for other courses on your official degree plan. However, they must be completed by the time you graduate.
Once you have been accepted into the ATPI program, you should contact the ATPI Master's advisor so that an official degree plan can be completed and submitted to the Graduate School.

The specific courses listed on the website for the Master's degree you have been accepted for (MEd or MS) are on the ATPI Master's page and will be used on the degree plan. You may transfer no more than 6 credit hours of 5000 level or above courses upon approval of the advisor. See the Graduate Catalog for specific information. If you are required to complete leveling courses changes will be made to the degree plan so there is no repetition of courses. ATPI electives are usually used for this purpose.
The degree plan will be sent by ATPI to the Graduate School and will be officially filed. You will receive a copy of your degree plan for your files. This is a six to eight week process.
It is your responsibility to review the course descriptions for the courses on your degree plan in the Graduate Catalog. Please note some ATPI courses have prerequisites.
- ATTD 5120 is a prerequisite for ATTD 5440 on the MEd degree plan unless you have had substantial training or teaching experience (discuss this with a LT masters advisor)
- EDER 5210 is a prerequisite for enrollment in ATTD 5340
- ATTD 5340 is a prerequisite for enrollment in ATTD 5360
- ATTD 5340 (taught each fall semester), followed by ATTD 5360 (taught each spring), should be taken in sequence within the last 15 semester hours of coursework.
You must follow your degree plan with no substitutions. Any changes in the degree plan must be approved by the Master's advisor and documented on a form filled out and forwarded to the Graduate School. Changes in degree plans are made only in select circumstances.
Follow the guidelines for graduation as specified in the Graduate Catalog. Questions regarding graduation should be made to the Graduate School.
For those candidates interested in pursuing a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching certificate, please be advised that the graduate level courses for certification may be used on a Master of Education degree plan in ATPI. However, the certification process and the Master's degree process are separate entities. For certification information, contact the ATPI office to be referred to the appropriate faculty member for specific information or visit the LT website
